Mental Health and Education Interview by Tamikio L. Dooley

Mental Healthy with Tamikio L. Dooley

1. Tell us about yourself.

My name is Akila Sunday Tuka. I am a strategic researcher, a public health professional with specialty in health promotion and prevention, a Prolific writer and Published Author, a career development specialist, a mentor, a business and life coach. I'm an ardent reader and lifelong learner.

2. Could you tell your expertise, for example, mental health, education, or both?

As a public health professional, I have vast expertise in mental health. As a trainer with over six years of experience in corporate professional development training, and as a researcher with over three years in academic research writing, supervision and mentorship, I will say I have tangible expertise in education.

3. What is your perspective on mental health? What are your mental health coping suggestions and advice?

My perspective on mental health: The value and worth of someone is largely dependent on their mental health and capacity, someone who is mentally sound is able to think productively, peacefully and maintain cordial relationships.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as: the ability to learn and think clearly and coherently. E.g., a person who is not mentally fit (retarded) could not learn something new at a pace in which an ordinary normal person learns.

Coping Strategies:

Mental health coping Strategies typically include a range of approaches to maintain resilience and well-being amid stress.

These strategies include:

1.  Engaging in regular physical exercise, maintaining balanced nutrition, and getting sufficient sleep to bolster overall health.

2.  Practices like meditation, deep breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation help reduce anxiety and increase emotional regulation.

3. Building and maintaining strong relationships with family, friends, or support groups promotes feelings of belonging and provides outlets for sharing concerns.

4. Seeking counseling or therapy whenever distress becomes overwhelming is essential for timely intervention.

5. Avoiding excessive use of substances like alcohol or drugs which worsen mental health over time.

The above coping strategies should be carried out routinely, not a onetime approach.

4. What’s your perspective on education? How would you define education, and why is it important globally? What are the positive effects of education on people, in your view?

Often times, people see Education as means of acquiring knowledge in order to be employed by either government or private organizations, but I see it also a way of enhancing one's talents, gifts and potentials.

When I was enrolled for my Masters in Public Health, some people were saying it will be good for me to secure job with an NGO or secure a lecturing job. But to me, I was only trying to enhance my skills, gifts, talents, potentials and ultimately boost my professional profile and credibility.

Education, to me is a lifelong process of acquiring knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that empower individuals to engage meaningfully in society. It's not just about formal schooling but about overall personal growth and social development.

Globally, education is essential because it shapes informed citizens capable of critical thinking, innovation, and collaboration. It drives economic growth, social equity, and democratic participation, which are vital for sustainable development.

The positive effects of education are vast: it enhances individual confidence and self-reliance, opens up better employment opportunities, and helps reduce poverty. Moreover, education promotes health awareness, gender equality, and peaceful coexistence by fostering understanding and tolerance among diverse populations.

In short, education is a powerful tool that transforms lives and societies by unlocking human potential and creating pathways to a better future for all.
